How To #2 – Effective Promotion

Creative Commons License photo credit: quickredfoxandkits

Here’s number 2 in my series of “how toarticles for bloggers.

What should you know about effective promotion of your blog?  You are probably already familiar with the usual litany of blogging.  Write posts, comment on other blogs , and guest post.  But is there more that you could be doing?  Funny you should ask.  Now let’s talk a little about what you could be doing to promote your blog more effectively. (Here’s a little freebie piece of advice.  Make sure you hit “save draft”, and not the “publish” button when you’re writing in the wordpress editor. heh)

New Posts

This one is not really promotion, but you need to add  fresh content to your blog regularly.  It doesn’t have to be an every day thing, but try to update, and add new articles on a fairly regular basis.  Think about it.  How many times are you going to keep coming back to aq blog if the content never seems to change.

Comments on other blogs

This is always on everyone’s list of promotional activities.  There’s a reason for that, of course.  It works!  As has been said already a hundred times, this does not mean making meaningless noises abut how helpful this post is.  Leave something with a little meat on it (Sorry vegetarians, but if God didn’t want us to eat animals, then why did he make them out of meat?  I’m sorry about that.  I couldn’t help myself.  It’s one of the funniest things I ever saw.  As a public service, here’s the truth.  The China Study proves that meat really is not very good for you.  The consumption of animal protein leads to all kinds of health problems.  End of health lesson.)  As I was saying before I so rudely interrupted myself, when you leave comments, be sure you are contributing to the conversation, and not just leaving noise.  The point of the exercise is two-fold.  One, you want the backlink, which is important to traffic.  More backlinks = higher rank on the search engines = more traffic (=more money if you are monetized).  Two, you want to leave a comment that has valuable content and is so well-written that readers feel that they just have to go see what your blog is all about.

Guest posting

Guest posting, like commenting has two purposes.  One is the backlink, and two is to gain readers.  Always check the blog you want to submit a guest post to for any rules or guidelines that they want guest posters to abide by or follow.  Since you’re trying to generate more backlinks, and traffic with your guest post, and you are using another bloggers site to do it, you owe them your very best work.  Your article will reflect on them as well as you.  Make sure you show them the respect and gratitude they deserve by offering only your best writing.

Build Links

There are a number of ways to get linksBlog carnivals, where a number of bloggers with a similar interest get together and list there latest offerings can be effective.  Get your blog listed in directories.  Find forums and take an active part in them.

Social media

Twitter and Facebook are changing the internet.  They should be an important part of your campaign to get people to be aware of your site.  Create accounts and talk.

SEO

Before I go I should probably mention something about SEO or search engine optimization.  In the comments and guest posting sections I briefly touched on backlinks.  They are the principal criteria for ranking.  There are different levels of backlinks.  The more authoritative the source of the backlink, the more weight it carries.  You also should be aware of keywordsKeywords are not just single words either.  They are the words and phrases people put into search engines.  The higher your page ranks in the search engines for any particular term, the more likely it is that people will click on the link to your page.  This is especially critical if your site has something to sell.  This one does not…yet.  It also helps your site to link to your own articles within your site, so don’t overlook that source of links.  I find it helpful to go through my posts after they are written to inspect them for keywords to use as tags, and to look for any terms I may have used that are well-suited to use for links.

Conclusion

The basic concept is simple.  You want your blog’s name to appear in as many places as you can possibly find.  The more places on the internet it shows up on, the more people will see it.  See, effective promotion isn’t that hard.

A Writer Is A Writer…Right?

Creative Commons License photo credit: srslyguys

As a blogger you write.  Someone once said somewhere, “writers write.”  Well if writers write, and bloggers blog, how many do both?  Some of us write more than others, but writing is what we do.  I try to post at least once a day.  Sometimes I’ll post more than once, which is probably why I never seem to get ahead on posting so I’ll have some in reserve.  I write ‘em, I post ‘em.  One day in the recent past I thought about scheduling my posts for the same time each day, and I guess if I had a backlog of posts I would still try it, but I don’t have a backlog of posts.  Back to the point I was coming to.  Do you, as a blogger find that you harbor a desire to write something other than a blog.  I have always been a voracious reader.  I gobble up novels that are 750 pages long in about 3 days.  I have also had fantasies about writing novels.  This is going to be a very short post.  It’s more of a poll, actually.  Here’s the question:

Do You Harbor A Desire To Write A Book?

Or do you have a desire to write in some other form?  Magazine articles?  A script for a movie or a play?  In the comments please share your writing goals.  Let’s all share our writing goals, or just writing fantasies.  What would you like to write?

Capture Screenshots The Easy Way With The Snipping Tool

WHAT IS IT?

The snipping tool is an application included in the Windows operating systems starting with the Vista distribution.  Rather than use use the PRTSC button to capture the whole screen and then have to crop it down, the snipping tool allows you to capture only that part of the screen that you want to use.  A real time saver.

HOW DO YOU USE IT?

When you activate the The Snipping Tool, a small box appears on your screen.

thesnippingtool copy Capture Screenshots The Easy Way With The Snipping Tool

As you can see in the image above there are instructions on the little box that appears.  When you click anywhere on the screen the little box will disappear and the little + so familiar to anyone who has used photo editing software will appear.  All you do is pull it in any direction to outline the area of the screen that you want and click.  Then all you do is open MS Paint and paste your image there.  On paint you can highlight an area and draw on it.  (see my article on the text editor for a screen shot of the sort of highlighting I’m referring to)  From there all I do is save it to my pictures file and open it in Photoshop Elements for further editing.  There are other editing software programs you can use, but Elements makes it so simple to resize to fit my content column, that I just love it.

WHERE DO YOU GET IT?

As I said at the top. if you have Windows Vista (other than Basic) or the new Windows 7, you already have it.  If you’re an XP user, you’ll have to download it from Microsoft.  You can do that here.  For Vista and Windows 7 users it’s a little easier.  Follow this sequence to find it: Start > All Programs> Accessories> Snipping Tool.  If you can’t see it there, then you need to activate it.  Open the Control Panel, and then click on Programs and Features.  On the left side click on Turn Windows Features On or Off.  Click Continue if you get a prompt for it.  Then scroll down until you see Tablet PC Optional Components and click the checkbox.  Then click OK.  That’s it.

After you play with it a bit you’ll develop a real appreciation for its ability to really spice up your blogging articles.

AS always, comments are encouraged.

When Not To Write A Post

How do you know when you should not write a post?  Have you chosen a subject that just doesn’t ignite your blog passion?  Then why do you want to write about it?  That’s not why you started a blog in the first place.  You did start one about something you feel passionate about, didn’t you?  If you never pay any attention to a piece of advice again, pay attention to that piece.  Without passion for your subject, blogging will be a chore.  You’ll find any excuse not to do it.  Which brings me to the real point of the post.

Why can’t I write this one?

If you’re finding it hard to write a post;  if you just can’t seem to keep your attention on what you’re trying to write, well then chances are that you’re trying to write about something that you just don’t care about.  Good luck with that.  So, is there a way to know before you start trying to write if the subject you’ve chosen is outside your areas of interest?  I’m glad you asked.  As a matter of fact the answer is that yes there is.  And here’s how.

Where did the idea come from?

Are you trying to write about something that is a popular subject just because it is popular?  That is not a good reason.  It would be far better to write a post about something you feel passionate about, and then promote the hell out of it, and make it the new popular subject.  Sure that’s a lot harder, but don’t you think it would be worth it?  You’d be the first in line.  You would be the authority.

Has it been waiting a long time for you to write it?

Has the idea for the post that refuses to write itself been sitting on the shelf for a long time waiting for you to come and take it down and begin to write it?  Has it been sitting in your list of blog post ideas?  You do have a list don’t you?  I didn’t used to, nut I have seen the light.  While you’re trolling around the internet looking for something that sparks your interest consider keeping a notebook handy.  That way when that wisp of an idea creeps quickly across your consciousness, you can instantly write it down.  They are elusive fellows, those post ideas, and if you don’t catch them quickly, they’ll just head down the street and find some other worthy blogger’s mind to give them birth.  Surely you’ve seen that before haven’t you?  You’re going through your list of daily blogs in your reader, and you see a post, and you recognize it.  You think to yourself, “Howdy, stranger.  I don’t think we’ve been introduced before, but your concept looks strangely familiar.  Why didn’t I write that?”

Maybe you haven’t thought about it enough yet.

Sometimes it may be something simple.  You have an idea but you just haven’t given it sufficient thought yet.  Your idea is not clear in your mind.  You’re not really sure about how you feel about the subject.  Spend some time thinking and making some notes.  Try to find a way to clarify your thinking.  When it’s clear then it will practically write itself.  Ask yourself some questions about it.  But remember, if you just can’t find some aspect of the post you’re trying to write that awakens your passion to write about it, then consider that you probably won’t be able to inspire other people to care either.  You don’t.  Why should they?  Either put it aside again, or just abandon it.  Every post idea is not necessarily a good one that will lead you to producing quality content, and quality content is what you’re after.  Quality content = Quality blog.  A blog that is worth returning to.

Attain Your Blogging Goals

4268878795 ae751c0b3c t Attain Your Blogging Goals

See that.  It’s a summit.  You have to climb up to get there.

I have a confession to make.  I try to sound positive on this blog, and on top of everything, but I gotta admit, sometimes I get down.  Does that happen to you too, fellow bloggers?

I had a relatively new blog up until a few days ago.  It was about 3 months old.  It was progressing nicely.  Nothing spectacular, but I was making progress.  I had gone from an Alexa ranking of around 4 million to one in the 700 thousands in about 3 weeks.  I was feeling pretty positive about it too.  I was messing around with code and trying to make it look better when I messed something up.  I messed up bad, too.  After compounding the problem another time or two, I committed a massive screw up in the file manager, and the blog disappeared.

Three months of work gone.  Bummer!  What did I do?  I didn’t whine about it.  I liked the blog, but it lacked focus, and since I had dreams of monetization, it really wasn’t a great candidate.  So I decided to start a new one (actually I plan on starting several, but this one is first).  When I began the first one I hadn’t really thought it out well.  I just knew I wanted a place to express myself.  And I wanted to express my self on a variety of subjects.  Rather than figure out which subjects I really cared about, I just thought I could write about many subjects on the one blog.  I have come to think that was not the best decision.  It’s better to have a niche. I read that shortly after I started the other blog, but I thought I could find away around it.  Note to self:  When Yaro Starak speaks…listen dammit!!! The guy knows his stuff.  There’s a reason the pro bloggers are the pro bloggers.  But back to the story.

I am working hard to get this blog up and running, but I’ve got that 17,244,602 Alexa number up there on the Alexa toolbar staring at me.  I think it’s mocking me and I hate it for that.  But after I get through feeling sorry for myself, I’m going to do something about that damned number.  Feel free to tell me that the number isn’t precise and that it doesn’t matter very much, but I won’t believe you.  It matters to me.  It’s a sort of confirmation that what I’m doing is making some small difference.  I decided to write this post about getting overwhelmed with a new blog, because it’s my guess that I’m not the only one out there that feels that way every now and again.

So what am I gonna do about it?  Well, there’s two components to blog successContent, and Promotion.  I’ve written about that before, and believe me, I’ll be writing about it again.  In one of my first posts I talked about the need to set what I called tactical goals.  These are the goals that you set to achieve your strategy of building a successful blog.  I said then that I would give actual numerical goals in a near future post.  Guess what.  The near future has arrived.

These then, are the goals I want to achieve on a daily basis to grow this blog:

  1. At least 1 new post every day, and sometimes more
  2. Comment on at least 20 blogs every day
  3. write and/or submit 3 guest posts every day for the next week

The first two are quite doable.  The third is really going to make me buckle down and seriously get to work.  Guest posting is probably the fastest way to get noticed.  And if you are going to be noticed then it had better be for great content.  For a guest post, I believe you should be submitting your best stuff.  After all, you’re trying to be invited into the house, and you don’t want to track in that dog dropping you just stepped in, do you?   Of course not.  Be a courteous guest.  Sure they’re getting free content, but you asked them to do you the honor of popularizing your writing.  Be grateful.

So.  There you have my new tactical goals for the next week.  Goals can always be reviewed and changed if necessary.  After a week, I’ll review and see how I did.  If I must I can adjust downward, but I think the goals should be a stretch.  By the same token, I may be able to change them upward.  We shall see.  And I will, of course keep you informed.

As always, comments are encouraged.

DAY 2 – GOALS

The Overview

The assignment for today will consist mainly of writing several articles for the blog. The purpose of the articles will be to lay out a more detailed plan to follow. I will be discussing blog promotion, and writing content. It's nice to have a blog that is appealing to the eye, and there will be more work on that, but the priorities must be content and promotion. A pretty blog does no one any good if there is nothing worthwhile to read on it, and there is no one to read it. As the blog goes on the articles will become more focused as different goals are accomplished. It's like building a car for instance.  After it's built and running, the rest is maintenance and polishing. Right now we're still building and the polish will have to stay on the shelf for a while longer. (You will find that I have a penchant for metaphors and similes.) Next…the goalsRead the rest of this entry »
